YDAA control the fishing on the right bank for over two miles. The fishery is split into two sections, the ‘Park Section’ and the ‘Village Section’.
The ‘Park Section’ commences at the old brick tower in the hall grounds to the bottom of the park (at Notice board). The River Nidd enters the Ouse on the opposite bank, approximately halfway down the stretch. Parking is in the hall grounds. Immediately over the cattle grid, at the car park entrance, turn left, following the track, then left again and park tidily.
Dropping of tackle at the hall gates is not allowed. Entry to the water is past the front of the hall, over the fence and follow the wall on the left round the field. The tower will be seen at the bottom of the field towards your right.
The ‘Village Section’ commences at the fence at the bottom of the park to field in front of the houses at Beningbrough Village. To access at the upstream end park on the concrete block at the hall entrance and walk down the filed using the public footpath to the river. This will take around 15 minutes and this access can be used to access the bottom of the park. To access the down stream end, park tidily on the verge in the village and walk through the house gardens using the public footpath.
This section of water holds most river species. It holds a large number of barbel some of the biggest in the river. Specimen pike are known to have been caught around the Nidd mouth. The stretch is well known for the numerous piles and snags, which run along the bank, and heavy gear is recommended for specimen fish. Don’t be scared to fish between the piles and the bank as the fish are often caught close in.
During the summer large bags of bream can be caught and there is a number of locations where these large shoals live on a permanent basis. Find the sand banks at the Nidd mouth and on the sweeping bends. Roach and perch can be caught in good numbers to pole, waggler or stick tactics. The large catches of bream inevitably fall to ground bait feeder tactics with caster or worm.
Travelling from York, take the A19 to Thirsk turn off at Shipton and follow the signs for Beningbrough Hall coach route.
This will in turn take you down a narrow lane and the village is sign posted with the Hall and Park section accessed through the lodge gates. Please follow the signs for the hall and drive slowly through the parkland.
