A sheltered, 1 acre pond on the outskirts of the village of Hemingbrough, not far from Selby. The pond is quite deep, shelving off to to well over 10ft less than a rod-length out in many swims. Lily and rush-lined in summer, the surrounding trees keep all but the worst weather off. Limited match fishing is allowed on this pond, and it can be night fished with prior agreement from the Treasurer.
The pond is stuffed full of roach and rudd which in summer respond well to maggot and caster fished up in the water, either on the pole or under a light waggler. Whilst the average stamp of fish is in the region of a few oz, fish to well over 1lb can be caught, particularly in the evening. Perch can be caught using similar tactics, and specimens of between 2-3lb are not uncommon. The pond holds a good head of tench which patrol right up to the bank in many swims. It is therefore possible to catch them on the pole or waggler in the shallower swims, although feeder rigs score well in most places. The tench are not huge, averaging 2-4lb. Bream of a similar stamp can be caught on similar tactics. Maggot, caster, sweetcorn and pellet will all score for the tench and bream. There are also a small number of carp present, some of which go well into double figures.
From York, take the A19 to Selby. At Barlby turn left onto the A63 Hull Road. Stay on A63 and at Hemingbrough take right turn onto Main Street signed “Village Centre”. At the village post office turn right onto Landing Lane. Bear right then left to stay on Landing Lane. Parking is on the verge on the right. The pond is 100m on the left, the track passing between the two farm fields.
