A tiny, clear flowing stream that is a delight to fish in the spring and summer. A roving approach pays but stealth and concealment are essential to avoid spooking the fish.
On the right hand bank, fishing is from Standing Beck down to Foston Bridge, then from Spital Bridge to one field upstream of the railway, then from Splashwater Bridge to the second plantation. On the left hand bank members can fish from Foston Bridge to Spital bridge.
There are reasonable numbers of wild brown trout, lots of small dace and pockets of chub in some of the deep pools. Minnows abound and there are occasional jack pike. Baits such as worm and maggot will score but for maximum enjoyment wear waders and carry a fly rod.
From York, take the A64 Scarborough road to the bottom of Whitwell Hill. Parking is on the side of the road before Whitwell-on-the-Hill and then up or downstream from where the beck flows under the road.
